What a Weekend: The Port Eliot Festival, Cornwall

Paul Mulhern

The Port Eliot Festival is an annual celebration of words, music, imagination, ideas, nature, food, fashion, flowers, laughter, exploration and fun.

An incredible array of performers have appeared at Port Eliot since the festival started over a decade ago, all drawn together by the festival’s laid-back approach and inspirational atmosphere. They include the likes of Dominic West, Kate Winslet, Martin Parr, Anna Sui, Anita Pallenberg, Barbara Hulanicki, Ralph Steadman, Jarvis Cocker, Jacob Dylan, Suggs, Julian Cope, the Hemsleys, Beth Orton, Stephen Jones, Jack Stein, Nathan Outlaw, Angela Hartnett, Thomasina Miers, Suzy Menkes, Edmund de Waal, Sarah Waters, William Dalrymple, Hanif Kureishi, Hannah Rothschild and Gavin Turk.

Our Favourite Stage:  Hole & Corner

Hole & Corner magazine is dedicated to celebrating craft, beauty, passion and skill. This year, the pages of the magazine will come alive at Port Eliot Festival, as we invite you to wander (and wonder) through our world at the ‘Makers’ tent.

In partnership with Affinity With Plymouth University, we will be curating a series of daily talks, live demonstrations and workshops from some of the finest designer-makers in the world.

We firmly believe that the route to happiness is making something with your own fair hand: or at the very least having a brew and watching the experts at work. Come in, learn a new skill or hone an old one; reconnect with Mother Nature or just have a mooch, a coffee and a chat.

There will be music from 5-7pm every evening at the Hole & Corner / Moshi Moshi stage… and look out for a number of special exclusive events taking place throughout the weekend

Wood Workshops with Benchmark, Sebastian Cox, Driftwood Surfboards and England’s last clog maker, Jeremy Atkinson.

Leather Workshops Belt and guitar-strap making with leatherware designer Bill Amberg Leather steaming + workshops with Tortie Hoare

Textiles  Dyeing workshops with artisan Aboubakar Fofana

Ceramics Workshops with Jacob Bodilly, Billy Lloyd and Stephie Buttle

Nordic Makers - Design & Craft Arrives in Dun Laoghaire

Paul Mulhern

Hofler Architects are delighted to see the arrival yesterday of "Nordic Makers" in Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin.

Nordic Makers promotes, showcases and retails new Nordic furniture and design at home and abroad. The company is founded on Nordic traditions and focused on the craft, the details, the distinctive Nordic vernaculars, and contemporary objects of simplicity and clean and clear lines.

Nordic Makers is a venture developed by the two Danes, Dr Louis Weyhe Funder and Klaus Kristian Sørensen. The aim is to exhibit and retail the very best new furniture and design from the Nordic countries.

Products are exclusive, unique and distinctly Nordic - designed and constructed by a combination of already-established designers and overwhelmingly by designers still at the infancy of their careers. The Makers come from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Greenland, and operate within the disciplines of furniture, textiles, jewellery, ceramics, glass, lighting, print and more.

On the Boards: New Infill Apartments for Dun Laoghaire

Paul Mulhern

Sketch Elevation Study Showing Materials.

Sketch Elevation Study Showing Materials.

Hofler Architects are currently working on a new scheme of 15 apartments and 2 town houses on a prominent infill site in Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin.  The new dwellings are being designed to the highest environmental and space standards to surpass all current regulations.

New retail units are to be provided at ground floor to enliven the street.  All new apartments will have generous south-facing balconies stretching to their full widths.  High quality materials are being selected such as Portland stone, contemporary brickwork and zinc cladding.  Elements of brighter colour are injected with built-in planter boxes.  Further colour is to be visible within the depth of the balconies where the dividing walls are to be highlighted.

Two new town houses are to be provided to the rear of the site, on the far side of an exciting, landscaped residents courtyard.  This outdoor space opens itself up to the west to make the most of afternoon sun.  It is to be heavily planted and provided with play equipment for children.  The town houses will form the backdrop to the courtyard and will be exceptionally private with all of their main spaces looking into their own private outdoor spaces.
