Industry - Carefully Curated Design

Paul Mulhern

We first noticed Industry on our many walks from the Hume Street office down to Dublin City Council's Planning Department for pre-planning discussions and lodging our planning applications.  Back then they were located in the East end of Temple Bar in a petite little premises.  Now that have a much bigger place on Dury Street in Dublin 2 and they're well worth a visit.  They've now even incorporated a great cafe.  Check them  out via the links below!

Industry are an independent home wares store located online and also at 41a/b Drury Street, Dublin 2

"Industry offers an evolving collection of carefully curated objects, furniture and wares for the home and everyday life. Some are new, some are old, some industrial and some recycled. All are hand chosen for their beauty, function, quality and uniqueness. We sell furniture, lighting, textiles and a huge range of accessories. Everything we sell has been hand picked whether it is vintage or new, one thing is for sure, we’ll be sad to see it go! We hope you like what you find online and in store!"

Two of Our Favourite Things...

Paul Mulhern

Great Coffee & Working Drawings!

Working Drawings - How Architects & Designers Communicate.

Working Drawings - How Architects & Designers Communicate.

Great coffee is up there as one of our favourites.  After spending three years in Melbourne how could it not be?  The coffee and cafe scene there are quite an amazing experience.

The other favourite is communicating our design intentions to the contractors we work with through the medium of the Working Drawing.  Clients usually get to see more of, and pay more attention to the earlier stage Design Sketches, but it's the working drawing that determines a great deal of the success of the final building.

If you were to hand the same sketch or planning stage drawing to three different builders you would get three vastly different tender prices and buildings.  Quality, finishes, details, standards, performance, weathering, would all be left open to interpretation - good or bad.

The Working Drawing's purpose is to flesh out the details of earlier sketch and planning stage drawings.  It describes the full intention of how the building is to be put together (in a lot of detail).  It tells builders what is to be done and therefore what way it's not to be done!  It allows for accurate pricing (along with the written specification) so you know you are comparing one builder's apples with another's apples.  It is used for the new Building Regulation compliance requirements (BCAR) and it records the professional input that goes into your building giving you peace of mind.

Without comprehensive Working Drawings great buildings don't happen.

Look what goes into a simple coffee pot.  Think about what goes into the drawings for your new home, renovation or extension!  Come and have a chat with us about what's involved in the various stages of commissioning architectural work for your home.  We'll even shout you a great coffee!

Nordic Makers - Design & Craft Arrives in Dun Laoghaire

Paul Mulhern

Hofler Architects are delighted to see the arrival yesterday of "Nordic Makers" in Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin.

Nordic Makers promotes, showcases and retails new Nordic furniture and design at home and abroad. The company is founded on Nordic traditions and focused on the craft, the details, the distinctive Nordic vernaculars, and contemporary objects of simplicity and clean and clear lines.

Nordic Makers is a venture developed by the two Danes, Dr Louis Weyhe Funder and Klaus Kristian Sørensen. The aim is to exhibit and retail the very best new furniture and design from the Nordic countries.

Products are exclusive, unique and distinctly Nordic - designed and constructed by a combination of already-established designers and overwhelmingly by designers still at the infancy of their careers. The Makers come from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Greenland, and operate within the disciplines of furniture, textiles, jewellery, ceramics, glass, lighting, print and more.

Skilled Work (Often Goes Unnoticed)

Paul Mulhern

We spotted this fascinating video on Vimeo and loved seeing the largely unappreciated skill that goes into shaping the perfect street lettering that we are constantly informed by but rarely 'notice'.

The film was made by London designer Tom Williams in the early hours of the morning outside his flat.

He could see them moving down the road painting some other road signs, and knew there was supposed to be a BUS STOP sign in that spot, so he set the tripod and camera up and waited for them to start.

And the work is genuinely amazing. You’d think that street painting would be a pretty basic process requiring little specialized skill or technique, but if this clip is any indication, that is far from the case.

With the help of his assistant, this painter confidently applies perfect yellow lettering onto the street freehand. No stencils and no mistakes…

If you had to list everything that fascinates you, it’s safe to say that footage of city workers painting lines on the road wouldn’t make it on the list. But maybe it should…

How much wonderful, useful & creative work of this kind goes on in the world unnoticed?

Look up, look around, take notice!
