Music in Monkstown Festival 2015

A WEEKEND OF MUSIC AND CELEBRATION

The second "Music in Monkstown" festival will present some of Ireland's leading musicians in a weekend of classical music and celebration from 18-20 September 2015.  Concerts will take place in the wonderful setting of Church of Ireland Parish Church, Monkstown, Co Dublin.

Music in Monkstown also announced that there will be two evenings of post concert Jazz @10pm @FXB's bar and restaurant on the Saturday and Sunday nights, thanks to the generous support of Newpark Music Centre.

Music in Monkstown is the brain-child of the RTE National Symphony Orchestra's principal clarinetist and Monkstown resident John Finucane, supported by other enthusiastic local music lovers. After an incredibly successful inaugural festival in 2014, MIM is back with another three days of fantastic classical music programming.

All five concerts will be held in Monkstown Parish Church.  The festival is supported by Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.

Monkstown has been home to Hofler Architects since 1992 and is one of the loveliest remaining villages in the Dublin area, with many amenities to hand. It has plenty of appealing shops, good places to eat and drink and the ambiance is one of relaxed elegance. Already a popular venue for classical music concerts, we are delighted to bring Monkstown its very own music festival.

MONKSTOWN PARISH CHURCH

The venue for all our Music in Monkstown concerts, Monkstown Parish Church was redesigned by the prolific 19th century church architect John Semple, who also created the Mansion House's Round Room in Dublin city centre. The church was a particular favourite of Sir John Betjeman, the British Poet Laureate and church historian who served as Press Attache with the Britisch Embassy in Dublin in the early 1940s. For him Monkstown Parish Chruch, which he visited frequently when staying with Gate Theatre founder Lady Wicklow who lived nearby, was on of the best examples of Semple's work around the city's suburbs.

Great Coffee & Working Drawings!

Working Drawings - How Architects & Designers Communicate.

Great coffee is up there as one of our favourites.  After spending three years in Melbourne how could it not be?  The coffee and cafe scene there are quite an amazing experience.

The other favourite is communicating our design intentions to the contractors we work with through the medium of the Working Drawing.  Clients usually get to see more of, and pay more attention to the earlier stage Design Sketches, but it's the working drawing that determines a great deal of the success of the final building.

If you were to hand the same sketch or planning stage drawing to three different builders you would get three vastly different tender prices and buildings.  Quality, finishes, details, standards, performance, weathering, would all be left open to interpretation - good or bad.

The Working Drawing's purpose is to flesh out the details of earlier sketch and planning stage drawings.  It describes the full intention of how the building is to be put together (in a lot of detail).  It tells builders what is to be done and therefore what way it's not to be done!  It allows for accurate pricing (along with the written specification) so you know you are comparing one builder's apples with another's apples.  It is used for the new Building Regulation compliance requirements (BCAR) and it records the professional input that goes into your building giving you peace of mind.

Without comprehensive Working Drawings great buildings don't happen.

Nordic Makers - Design & Craft Arrives in Dun Laoghaire

Hofler Architects are delighted to see the arrival yesterday of "Nordic Makers" in Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin.

Nordic Makers promotes, showcases and retails new Nordic furniture and design at home and abroad. The company is founded on Nordic traditions and focused on the craft, the details, the distinctive Nordic vernaculars, and contemporary objects of simplicity and clean and clear lines.

Nordic Makers is a venture developed by the two Danes, Dr Louis Weyhe Funder and Klaus Kristian Sørensen. The aim is to exhibit and retail the very best new furniture and design from the Nordic countries.

Products are exclusive, unique and distinctly Nordic - designed and constructed by a combination of already-established designers and overwhelmingly by designers still at the infancy of their careers. The Makers come from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Greenland, and operate within the disciplines of furniture, textiles, jewellery, ceramics, glass, lighting, print and more.

On the Boards: A New-Build Costal Eco House

We have received planning permission for a new family dwelling in a beautiful costal setting overlooking Strangford Lough.  The site benefits from spectacular views through a 270-degree sweep.  Designing for a location as beautiful as this is difficult. We are not trying to do design gymnastics. We are fully considering what it is our clients want for their home and realising that through design excellence.

Our approach is based on:  Awareness of landscape; A simple palette of natural materials; Subtlety; Respect for rural built forms;  Withholding of views, affording glimpses on approach, finally revealing the full dramatic views;  Creating wonderful internal spaces with unexpected height & light; Forming a series of differing outdoor spaces which are protected from winds but yet avail of views; Considering orientation and sun position throughout the day;  Incorporating all appropriate sustainability measures to exceed all current requirements and to future-proof this new eco house.

We have included a level of richness by providing a play-loft, a second ‘short-cut’ stair which also functions as a bookcase, a study (computer) den for kids which is within view and has an eye-level slot window, creating a thickened wall that houses both indoor and outdoor fire-places (or barbeque), designing a master bedroom suite which has complete privacy, spectacular views, its own terrace, yet is adjacent to two children’s bedrooms;
