Paul Mulhern Architect  -  MRIAI  BArch(Hons)  BEng(Arch)

RIAI Member No: 07350

Lead architect Paul Mulhern graduated from UCD with honours in 1999.  Since then he has led his own architecture practice and worked in a number of leading practices in Dublin and Melbourne returning from Australia in January 2015.  He has a wide range of experience across an array of building types including:

  • Domestic extension and renovation projects,

  • New one-off house design,

  • Housing development schemes for the public & private Sectors,

  • Urban Infill and brownfield Schemes,

  • Commercial Projects: Bars, Restaurants, Retail, office,

  • Creative reuse of protected structures and heritage buildings,

  • Eco and sustainable projects and developments.

As well as new design, our work includes a wealth of experience in conservation and working on protected structures.  Paul co-founded a practice in Dublin in 2007 - a number of projects from this earlier practice are featured on the project pages.  The partnership was dissolved in January 2012 due to economic conditions.  Paul also worked with Howley Harrington for five years (both practices held RIAI grade 1 conservation accreditation).  While in Melbourne he worked on a number of the city’s largest and most important heritage buildings with Lovell Chen Architects and Heritage Consultants.

He has a passionate interest in sustainability from first principals - an approach that considers expensive technologies with long pay back periods only after all, more cost-effective passive design measures have been addressed.  His most significant eco-project to date has been the Rock Farm at Slane Castle where he designed six new straw bale buildings (including Ireland's largest) for this major eco-tourism development.

 Specialties:

  • Creative Reuse of Protected Structures. Sensitive restoration, adaption & extension of Historic Buildings to accommodate new uses.

  • Sensitive contemporary new-build design for all building types.

  • Sustainable design.

 Teaching:

  • Guest Critic, second year Architecture degree course, Melbourne University, 2013/14.

  • Guest Tutor, final year Architectural Technology course, Dublin Institute of Technology, 2010.
